Areola/Nipple Correction
Midland, TX

The Center of the Problem

For some women, their breast-related concerns are limited to the look and shape of their nipples and/or areolas. Nipples can be made smaller, shorter, or sometimes longer depending on the desire of the patient. Though some wouldn’t admit it, this situation can affect their self-esteem.

Are you considering nipple correction?

Many women (and increasingly, men) who approach plastic surgeons seeking smaller nipples or areolae feel that their ratio of nipple to breast is disproportionate.

Some women's nipples are inverted or protrude too far, while other women have areolas that are too large or puffy. Disproportionately large areolae can give your breasts an unbalanced appearance. While there are usually no medical complications from having large areolas, inverted nipples, etc., women often desire correction to change the appearance of their nipple/areola.

If you feel self-conscious about the size of your nipples or areolae, surgery may be a procedure you could benefit from. Many patients undergo nipple or areola reduction to address the following issues:

Nipple Correction Surgery

Dr. Durgin is experienced in performing procedures that target the nipples and areolae, meaning a higher likelihood of a satisfactory final result and less risk of complications.

The areola reduction procedure can be performed alone; however, this is frequently done in conjunction with other breast surgeries including breast reductions and breast lifts.

  • Anesthetic All reductions begin with a doctor examination to determine the available options to achieve the desired results. Nipple Correction is an outpatient procedure, performed under deep sedation by a certified nurse anesthetist or certified nurse practitioner.
  • Shaping The Nipple The procedure starts by removing some of the circular area on the outer edge of the areola. The surrounding skin will then be pushed inwards in a string fashion around the areola. Permanent stitching may be placed deeper in the tissue to avoid unwanted widening of the areola during recovery.
  • Setting The Nipple The goal is to minimize scarring and this is achieved by performing the smallest incision necessary. To correct overly large or protruding nipples, Dr. Durgin removes the tips of the nipples and closes the area with stitches.
  • Recovery Despite the fact that this surgery is very simple, it is still best for you to take it easy for the first few weeks. Sleep or rest with your head slightly elevated, avoiding sleeping on your side. Keep your arms close to your body, and avoid lifting weights until allowed by your surgeon.

Should You Consider Nipple Correction?

  • To increase confidence and self-esteem
  • To improve your body image
  • If your nipplesare different in size and/or shape (asymmetrical)
  • To restore lost size that occurs from weight loss or breast feeding
  • If your breasts are sagging or have lost firmness
