Wrinkles are a part of the natural aging process but sometimes they make us look older than we actually are. Within the last few years people are starting to live healthier lifestyles to live longer lives but sometimes diet and exercise are not enough to keep our skin from showing our age. The aging process causes the face and hands to lose underlying fat and collagen, which then causes our skin to sag and results in unwanted wrinkles.

Injectable wrinkle fillers and dermal fillers have become more popular with the instant effect they have addressing skin sagging and wrinkle problems that result from aging, sun damage, skin trauma, scarring, or disease. The injectable wrinkle and dermal fillers are most commonly used to treat facial lines and wrinkles, hollow cheeks and eyes, receding chins, thinning lips, and wrinkles between the eyes.

By boosting the skin’s supply of hyaluronic acid, dermal fillers revitalize and add volume to the skin, instantly diminishing the appearance of lines and wrinkles, and giving a natural softer look. Dermal fillers are a soft injectable gel consisting of stabilized, non-animal hyaluronic acid. The gel is tissue-friendly and closely resembles the hyaluronic acid that exists naturally in the body. It is long lasting but not permanent.

Hyaluronic acid is made from non-animal products and is genetically engineered to mimic the body’s own Hyaluronic Acid. It has been used for many years without any serious long-term side effects. 

Dermal fillers can be used to smooth away facial lines and wrinkles, create fuller lips and shape facial contours, such as cheeks and chin, and revitalize the skin. They can be used to correct problem areas such as laugh lines, smile lines, smoker’s lines, and marionette lines.

The most common areas treated are:

▪ Nose to mouth lines (the nasolabial folds)

▪ Between the eyebrows (the glabella lines)

▪ Lips (adding volume and shape)

▪ Cheeks

Before

After discussion of what you wish to achieve and assessment of your treatment needs, they will recommend which dermal filler treatment is most suitable to achieve your overall appearance goals.

During

Dermal filler is injected into the skin in small amounts using a very fine needle. The gel provides natural volume to smooth away the appearance of lines and wrinkles, enhance facial shape, or create fuller lips. Dermal filler products improve the elasticity and texture of skin, restoring and maintaining the skins hydro balance.

The treatment is quick, typically taking about 15-30 minutes, depending on the number of injection sites and injectables used. Treatment with dermal fillers does not affect facial expression and the benefits can normally be seen instantly.

After

Dermal filler products are biodegradable, which means they will naturally disappear in the body. To ensure an optimal and long lasting result, a touch-up treatment is recommended 6-12 months after your initial Dermal Filler treatment. Discuss with our practitioner when a follow-up appointment may be appropriate.

After a treatment some reactions may occur, these include; slight redness, swelling, itching, bruising, pain and tenderness. The reactions are generally mild to moderate and usually disappear shortly after injection. They typically resolve spontaneously within one or two days, but for some treatments they may last longer. 

One of the great advantages of dermal filler treatment is that the effects are long lasting but not permanent. Duration depends on many factors, such as the individual’s skin type, skin condition lifestyle and age. After the initial treatment, follow-up sessions are normally recommended around every 6 to 12 months depending on the individual and the treatment.

Most people can benefit from dermal filler treatment. If you wish to;

▪ reduce lines and wrinkles

▪ create more defined or fuller lips,

▪ define the contours of your face, such as chin or cheek,

▪ boost your skin’s vitality, for a healthier more hydrated skin tone

(e.g. face, hands, neck or décolletage)

Dermal fillers should not be used in or near areas where there is or has been skin disease, inflammation or skin related problems. Dermal fillers have not been tested in pregnant or breast-feeding women, individuals with medical conditions that lower the body’s immune response or individuals undergoing therapy that is immunosuppressive may be more prone to infection by a skin injection procedure.

More than 15 million treatments in more than 65 countries worldwide have been performed since the launch of Restylane dermal filler in 1996. Product related reactions are rare. There are some injection related reactions, which may occur after any injection; they typically resolve spontaneously a few days after injection to the skin, within a week after injection into the lips. These reactions include redness, swelling, pain, itching, bruising or tenderness at the injection site.

After lip enhancement, lips may swell for up to a week, but this typically reduces after two to three days.

Common uses for dermal fillers include*: 

•      Correcting folds and wrinkles of the face 
•      Acne scars 
•      Nasolabial folds (between your nose, mouth and cheeks) 
•      Horizontal (upper forehead) frown lines 
•      Glabellar (lower forehead) frown lines 
•      Chin augmentation 
•      Depressed corners of the mouth, also known as marionette lines 
•      Lip enhancement, including treatment of the edges of the lips and wrinkles around the lips to stop lipstick from leaking from your lips onto the surrounding skin 

Other uses for dermal fillers include:       Filling subcutaneous skin defects       Filling of orbits of the eyes       Augmentation of cheek bones, chin or bridge of the nose       Correcting some irregularities of the nose       Filling small facial bone or hand bone defects 

People who have thin, loose skin in the area to be treated 

People who have unrealistic expectations (as with any treatment, you need to have an accurate understanding of the likely benefits and risks of dermal filler treatment.) 

There is no technical or medical reason why dermal fillers should not be used during pregnancy.  However, Medical Spa of Midland will not perform any medical aesthetic procedure during pregnancy of client.

Looking after our appearance is not a fault. After all, would you leave your house with broken gutters or peeling paint? Why do less for your body? I think you should feel proud of yourself for having the will and the ability to change something that you find unacceptable. I emphasize that you should only have dermal fillers and other treatments if it is for you. It is a big mistake to do these things if it is just for somebody else. The same self-esteem that makes our patients successful in their chosen fields, precise in their consultation questions, well groomed and dressed, and often careful in their diet, exercise, and other aspects of health maintenance leads many of our patients to seek help for their wrinkles and frown lines. These individuals are normal healthy people, and the same degree of self-interest that prompts them to exercise, be selective in what they eat and drink, and protect themselves from sun damage leads them to explore the benefits of dermal fillers. Our patients simply want to look their best.

It is good to pamper yourself on treatment day! If you have a nice big breakfast or lunch, and an extra glass of water, you will be more comfortable. Many patients like to take a couple of plain Tylenol before treatment (similar to what you might do before having a flu shot) to prevent discomfort. As a practical matter, bruising is seldom a major problem after dermal filler treatments. The chance of bruising can be reduced by minimizing your consumption of NSAIDS, alcohol and Vitamin E for 3 days before a dermal filler treatment. Please wear no makeup, or makeup that is easy to remove, so that the area to be treated can be clearly seen. You can bring makeup with you, and you may apply your makeup immediately after treatment. 

After a dermal filler treatment, there is occasionally some pain, swelling, itching or redness at the site of injection — similar to what you could experience after any injection. You may take a couple of plain Tylenol 3 times a day to reduce swelling and discomfort. Aspirin should be avoided as it may increase bruising at the site of injection. Cold compresses or ice packs can also be used to reduce any swelling, itching or discomfort. Redness may last for 1 — 2 days, occasionally longer in some patients. Swelling in the lips can last for a week, and the lips may appear somewhat uneven until the swelling subsides.  In order to allow the filler to stabilize, try to avoid excessive movement of your facial muscles for the next few days, and in particular during the first 6 hours after your dermal filler treatment.  Until the initial swelling and redness have resolved, do not expose the treated area to intense heat (e.g. hot packs and sunbathing) or extreme cold. 

Juvederm has all but replaces collagen as a filler. It’s smoother than collagen making it much easier to shape and sculpt with. Lumpiness and irregular contours are much less likely with Juvederm. Juvederm also lasts more than three times as long as collagen. Compared with Restylane, the other HA filler, Juvederm is softer and feels more natural. Most patients who have had both prefer Juvederm and say that it feels softer and more natural. Juvederm is also FDA-approved to last up to one year – about twice as long as Restylane. 

You see the results immediately* with Juvederm. And the look continues to improve for 1-2 weeks as the Juvederm softens and draws moisture into the area. 

Our Juvederm appointments are usually 30 minutes long. The injections usually take about 15 minutes and we add another 15 minutes to allow enough time for the numbing injections to work completely 

Does Juvederm Hurt? In most cases, not at all. I can numb most areas of the face (lips, cheeks, eyelids, forehead) with local anesthetic nerve blocks. once this is done, you won’t feel the Juvederm injections.
